Headaches Q & A
What are some of the most common types of headaches?
Virtually everyone will experience some form of head pain at one point or another during the course of their life. One of the most common headache types is the tension headache, which is characterized by a dull pain and a sensation of tightness across the scalp or neck. Exertion headaches lead to short term generalized pain that directly follows a period of physical exertion. Cluster headaches lead to debilitating pain behind her around the eyes and can last several hours. Migraine headaches are also severe in nature, and sufferers often report sensations of nausea and sensitivity to light and sound during a migraine headache.
What causes persistent headaches?
There are a number of different causal factors that can lead to head pain. For headaches that persist or are severely painful, it is important to seek prompt medical attention. Some of the causes of head pain require immediate treatment, including trauma to the head, the development of an aneurysm, or the growth of one or more tumors. Eliminating these possible causes is the first step in diagnosing headaches. Other causes of persistent headaches include a genetic propensity for migraines, excessive stress, and even hormonal changes associated with a woman's menstrual cycle.
How are headaches treated in a medical setting?
Once the cause of head pain has been determined, the physician can create a customized treatment plan. In some cases, prescription medications can be excellent tools for managing pain. For other patients, the elimination of certain irritants from their daily environment is an effective way to eliminate headaches. Other tools include biofeedback therapy, stress reduction techniques, avoidance of triggers and treatment of underlying medical conditions. As with so many medical issues, each patient will have a unique set of needs and goals when it comes to treating headaches. That is why an individualized approach is the best way to attain effective and lasting relief from pain, as well as a return to normal daily function.
